UK customs rules in 2025: what peer travelers need to know

Post-Brexit UK customs is a separate system from the EU. Here is how it affects Sendways travelers and senders.

Since leaving the EU, the UK has operated its own customs system. For peer travelers entering or leaving the UK, the rules are different from pre-2021 and different from EU rules.

Arriving in the UK with goods. Use the Green Channel (nothing to declare) if your total goods, including sender packages, fall below GBP 390 (for air and sea arrivals). Above this, use the Red Channel or Customs Declaration Zone.

Gifts. Goods sent as gifts and valued under GBP 39 per gift are duty and tax-free. Above GBP 39, VAT (20%) applies. Above GBP 135, both VAT and duty apply.

Alcohol and tobacco. Specific allowances apply: 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of still wine, 4 litres of spirits, 200 cigarettes. Peer travelers should not carry alcohol or tobacco for senders without understanding these limits precisely.

Leaving the UK with goods for others. Export controls apply to some goods. For typical Sendways shipments (clothing, consumer electronics, food), export licensing is rarely relevant.

What has changed since Brexit. Previously, EU goods arriving in the UK were treated the same as domestic goods. Now they face the same customs checks as goods from any other country. This has increased processing time on some EU-UK routes.

Practical advice for travelers on UK routes. Carry printed contents lists and value declarations for all sender packages. HMRC officers are professional but thorough. Being prepared reduces your time in secondary inspection significantly.
