De minimis import rules by country: the peer traveler's reference

The de minimis threshold is the amount below which no customs duty is charged. Every country is different.

The de minimis threshold (the customs value below which imports are duty-free) varies dramatically by country. For peer travelers, knowing these numbers is essential.

High thresholds (traveler-friendly). United States: USD 800. Australia: AUD 1,000 (approximately USD 650). Both are among the most generous in the world.

Medium thresholds. United Kingdom: GBP 135 for duty, though VAT applies from GBP 0 (gifts under GBP 39 get a gift allowance). Switzerland: CHF 150 (approximately EUR 150).

Low thresholds (more scrutiny required). European Union: EUR 150 for duty. VAT applies from EUR 1. Brazil: USD 50 for mailed goods. India: INR 2,000 for bonafide gifts (approximately USD 24). Strict enforcement.

Canada: CAD 20 for postal imports / CAD 200 for courier imports. Far lower than the US threshold. Canadian customs catches many senders off guard on international packages.

Zero de minimis. Some countries apply duty to all imports regardless of value. Nigeria, for example, has no general de minimis threshold, though returning residents have a personal-effects allowance.

Important note. These thresholds change. Always verify current rules with the official customs authority of the destination country. This article reflects rules as of early 2025 and is a guide, not legal advice.
