Peer delivery is not always better. Here is an honest look at when each option makes more sense.
Peer delivery is not the right choice for every situation. Here is an honest comparison of peer delivery and traditional courier services across the dimensions that matter.
Cost. Peer delivery wins significantly on most routes, especially Africa-Europe, Africa-North America, and intra-Africa corridors. Savings of 30-70% versus express courier are common.
Speed. Peer delivery is tied to human travel schedules. If a traveler is leaving tomorrow, your item arrives tomorrow plus the delivery day. If no traveler is available for two weeks, peer delivery is slow. Traditional couriers run on fixed schedules regardless of passenger demand.
Reliability. Traditional couriers offer end-to-end tracking and service guarantees. Peer delivery offers personal accountability; the traveler has their identity and reputation on the line. Different types of reliability, not directly comparable.
Last-mile delivery. Peer delivery, where the traveler delivers to the recipient directly, often has better last-mile performance than couriers who require collection from depots.
Item safety. Traditional couriers have controlled environments with established damage-liability frameworks. Peer delivery item safety depends on the traveler's packing and handling.
The honest answer. For personal goods under 10 kg on diaspora-heavy corridors, peer delivery is almost always cheaper and often faster. For large commercial shipments, time-critical deliveries, fragile high-value goods, and routes with poor peer-traveler supply, traditional couriers are the better choice. The platforms are complementary, not mutually exclusive.
