Glass, ceramics, electronics, and other fragile goods can travel safely with the right preparation.
Fragile items need extra thought when going through a peer traveler. Unlike a courier with a van, the traveler is carrying your item alongside their own luggage on a plane, train, or car journey. The packaging has to survive that reality.
The double-box method for glass and ceramics. Wrap the item in at least 3 cm of bubble wrap or foam. Place it in a snug inner box. Surround that inner box with packing peanuts or crumpled paper in a larger outer box. The item should not shift when you shake the box.
Electronics. If you have the original manufacturer's box, use it; it is designed for the device. Otherwise, use a rigid box and anti-static bubble wrap. Remove batteries from devices where possible.
Always label as fragile. A large "FRAGILE - THIS SIDE UP" marking in permanent marker on multiple faces of the box costs nothing and reminds the traveler to handle it with care.
Be honest with the traveler. Some travelers will decline fragile items; they are liable for damage and cannot control how the airline handles checked luggage. Discuss this before confirming the booking. A traveler who knows your item is fragile will pack it carefully in carry-on or in the middle of their suitcase surrounded by soft items.
Consider insurance. Sendways escrow covers payment disputes, not transit damage. For high-value fragile items, consider separate shipping insurance if the item cannot be replaced.
Is peer delivery right for your fragile item? For truly irreplaceable objects (family heirlooms, antiques, fine art), a specialist courier with transit insurance may be more appropriate. Peer delivery excels at cost and speed, not white-glove handling.
