Good packaging protects your item and makes the traveler's job easier. Here is what to know before the handoff.
When you send an item through a peer traveler, the packaging is your responsibility, and it matters more than most senders realise. A well-packaged item is easier for the traveler to carry, less likely to be damaged in transit, and far less likely to attract customs scrutiny.
Use rigid outer packaging for anything fragile. A sturdy cardboard box, padded on all sides with bubble wrap or crumpled paper, is the gold standard. Soft items like clothing can go in a sealed resealable bag inside a fabric tote. Avoid flimsy plastic bags as the only layer of protection.
Seal everything properly. Tape all seams on boxes. Zip-lock bags should be double-sealed. If a customs officer opens the package for inspection, the traveler needs to be able to re-seal it easily.
Label clearly but discreetly. Write the recipient's name and phone number on a card inside the package. You do not need to display the full address on the outside, but the traveler needs a way to reach the recipient at drop-off.
Keep weight honest. If your listing says 1.5 kg, the package must be 1.5 kg. Travelers weigh their luggage at check-in and overweight charges come out of their pocket. Disagreements about weight are one of the most common disputes on peer-delivery platforms.
Include a contents note. A short handwritten or printed note describing what is inside ("cotton clothing, size M, gift") helps the traveler answer customs questions confidently. Keep it factual and accurate.
What not to do: Do not use packaging that looks tampered with. Do not hand over a package that is sticky, wet, or emitting any odour. Do not ask the traveler to carry anything in an unmarked container with no description.
Taking five minutes to pack properly builds trust with your traveler and gets your item there in one piece.
